As previously stated, the Doctor must obtain the informed consent (download it HERE) from the patient, BUT is not obliged to indicate it in the prescription: the purpose is in fact to “protect” the Doctor and is solely within their competence, in addition to the fact that it would render the confidentiality of the prescription null (because the informed consent indicates the patient’s name and surname). Once this is done, fill out the medical cannabis prescription on a private prescription (white prescription) with the following formalities:

It is strongly recommended, only and exclusively in the case of the prescription of extracts (oil, resins, creams, etc…) that the doctor indicates the dosage in mg of THC or in mg of CBD, NOT in drops or ml, leaving it to the pharmacist to convert the dose of THC or CBD into the corresponding number of drops or ml based on the actual content of the extract.

Where can I find a Doctor who can write a medical cannabis prescription?

First of all, it should not be forgotten that any doctor can issue a medical cannabis prescription (for a fee): for this reason, even the general practitioner can do so, but this is not mandatory since a doctor can only prescribe a drug if, in good faith and conscience, they believe it is necessary to treat the patient’s condition.

Remember: a doctor is never obliged to prescribe a drug, whether cannabis or not.

It is not possible, for legal reasons, to indicate in this article where and which doctors prescribe medical cannabis in Italy. However, we can suggest:

  • contact pharmacies that do galenic preparations on Cercagalenico.it and ask individually if they have names of doctors or if they know specialized centers where medical cannabis is used
  • ,

  • use Google, Duckduckgo, Bing, Yahoo as search engines to find prescribing doctors
  • register on www.letsweed.com and see if the names of the doctors are available
  • , ask other patients on Facebook or other social networks

Some frequently asked questions about the prescription of medical cannabis

What is meant by “cannabis oil”?

The term “cannabis oil” is often used to refer to alcohol extract, that is, FECO or RSO resin (Rick Simpson Oil), but from a pharmaceutical point of view, the correct reference is to cannabis olive oil, that is, an olive oil extract. The error likely arises from the American term oil which, in Italian, is literally translated as OIL, thus automatically associating it with olive oil, while in reality it refers to the consistency of the alcoholic resin. For more information on cannabis oil, you can read the dedicated article.

What is the correct prescription to download for an oncological disease?

It depends: in case of pain, rolling papers or cannabis oil are generally used. If you wish to use Rick Simpson oil or full extract cannabis oil, the recommended preparation is that of cannabis resin in an alcoholic extract. NOTE: read a lot carefully (and make sure you understand it well) before downloading the facsimile.
